This position could be based on Irvine, CA, Calexico, CA or Delaware, OH. Relocation is available from anywhere within the U.S.

 

The Sr. Magnetics Design Engineer will be accountable for the magnetics design used in our client's AC power products.

 

  • Design magnetic components for UPS and power distribution products, including transformers, chokes, and other inductors, to meet specifications for power, configuration, size, cost, efficiency, and manufacturability
  • Support manufacturing facilities to develop fabrication and testing techniques for magnetic components
  • Test prototype components to verify compliance with specifications
  • Analyze magnetic component failures to determine root cause and corrective action
  • Review new materials, design, and manufacturing technologies and recommend adoption for promising technologies
  • Some travel may be required (less than 15%).

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide design assistance to our global engineering teams including participation in concept and design reviews.
  • Provides authoritative technical leadership to Engineers and other team members.
  • Other related tasks as assigned

 

Interactions:

 

  • Direct interaction with cross-functional engineering teams such as mechanical, systems, test, manufacturing, firmware and global engineering.
  • Direct interaction with the manufacturing teams responsible for building the magnetics components and the procurement teams responsible for acquiring the materials specified in the design of the magnetics components.

 

Requirements:

  • At least 8+ years of overall electrical engineering experience.
  • In-depth knowledge (at least 5 years) of theory and practice in magnetic component design, specifically high frequency switching effects in the designs of magnetic components for use with high power PWM switching inverters.

·          Solid Transformer and Inductor Design experience, knows the laws, rules, and equations and can design from scratch

·          Power Transformer and Inductor Design  100KVA to 2000KVA (2MVA) at Low Voltage (200, 400, 600V)

·          Three Phase Transformer design experience

·          Three Phase and Single Phase Inductor Designs

·          High Frequency Magnetics design, switching frequency above 1KHz

·         Knowledge on manufacturing techniques of Power magnetics

  • Skilled in the use of electromechanical simulation, analysis and design tools such as Ansoft.
  • Familiarity with FMEA
  • Thorough knowledge of agency requirements for magnetic components
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments productively
  • Ability to work in a challenging, team oriented environment
  • Ability to collaborate on a global scale

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Four-year degree in electrical engineering with power emphasis
  • Prefer advanced degree in electrical engineering specializing in power design
  • Direct experience with transformer manufacturing and testing
